David Ben Gurion was born as David Grün in the Polish town of Płońsk in 1886 and devoted his entire life to the dream of a Jewish homeland. He was a leading figure of the Zionist movement and the first Prime Minister of the State of Israel, serving in this position with breaks for a total of thirteen years. He stood at the declaration of Israel's independence on May 14, 1948, led the country to victory in the War of Independence, and oversaw the building of state institutions as well as the acceptance of hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants from around the world. After leaving politics in 1970, he settled in the kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev Desert. Time magazine posthumously ranked him among the 100 most significant figures of the 20th century.
