This book is a fundamental biographical and analytical study of the life, work, and thought of one of the most significant medieval Jewish scholars, Rabbenu Moses ben Nachman (Ramban). He lived in the years 1194–1270 in Catalonia (born in Girona) and in Israel at the end of his life. He was a prominent rabbi, Talmudist, Kabbalist, philosopher, poet, and physician. He wrote an influential commentary on the Torah and in 1263 successfully defended Judaism in the famous Barcelona Disputation before King James I of Aragon. The author is Chaim Dov Chavel, a prominent twentieth-century American-Israeli rabbi and scholar, who became the world's most recognized editor and translator of Ramban's writings.
