12 stones in memory of the twelve tribes of Israel.

According to tradition, 12 stones were set into the breastplate of the High Priest, engraved with the names of the tribes of Israel, and together they formed the “Urim” and “Tumim.” Their use and meaning are the subject of religious debate – but they were probably some kind of divinatory tools. A properly attired High Priest could use the Urim and Tumim for mystical contemplation, reflection, and meditation until he reached the enlightened state known as ruach ha-kodesh. At that moment, it was possible to see how certain letters on the stones of the breastplate began to shine, and from those illuminated letters, the answer had to be assembled.
