Hanukkah
Hanukkah
A holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. There they found only one vessel of oil at that time. However, it lasted for eight days until new oil was produced. And that's why Hanukkah lasts just as long. It is usually celebrated in December and is a festival of lights. Why? The Hanukkah menorah - chanukiah - is lit. Children receive gifts. And hand on heart, adults also like to give gifts to each other.
How we celebrate: It usually starts with anticipation. Looking forward to the holiday when everything shines, peace and tranquility reign, and tables are laden with delicious food. Every evening, a candle or oil lamp is lit on the chanukiah. Dreidel is played - literally a gambling game for money. However, often for chocolate money. Or for candies. Selected stories from the Torah are remembered, songs are sung, visitors come and go, and the pounds pile on.
What we eat: Since oil plays the main role in Hanukkah, it also takes center stage in the kitchen. So there's a lot of frying. Traditionally, we have jelly-filled doughnuts or potato pancakes. And with that, milk, dairy products, and all kinds of sweets.
What we wish: On greeting cards, gift tags, or even in email correspondence, we write "Chag Chanuka sameach". Which means "Happy Hanukkah".
