Sukkot
Sukkot
Also called the Feast of Tabernacles. It commemorates the Israelites' journey through the desert, during which they built simple shelters - tents. The holiday begins on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei and lasts seven days. During this time, people eat and stay in temporary booths - sukkot. Seven guests (ushpizin) are always invited here. They are Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David. A successful comedy Ha-Ushpizin was made about the course of the Sukkot holiday.
How we celebrate: During these days, families, friends, and entire Jewish communities build cute smaller or larger shelters - sukkot. People eat, drink, and talk in them every day. No guest may be sent away. Another major symbol of this holiday is the lulav bundle, also called the Four Species. And why? It includes willow branches, myrtle twigs, a palm branch, and the fruit of a cultivated citrus. In Hebrew also arava, hadas, lulav, and etrog. This bundle is waved in all directions.
What we eat: It's not so important what's on the table, more important is that the table is in the sukkah. Some people like traditional soup with kreplach (meat dumplings), others like cabbage rolls or borscht. The last day of this holiday is delicious. Roast meat and lots of sweets may appear on the table.
What we wish each other: Most often "Chag Sameach", meaning "happy holidays".
