Maharal - the Hebrew abbreviation for "Moreinu ha-Rav Löw", i.e. "Our teacher, Rabbi Löw" - is the honorary title of one of the most important figures in Jewish history. Yehuda Liva ben Bezalel (1512-1609) served as Chief Rabbi of Prague and became a legend during his lifetime.

He was a man of many faces - a brilliant philosopher, Kabbalah scholar, mathematician, educator and spiritual leader. His writings on ethics, education and mysticism have influenced generations of scholars around the world. According to legend, he created the Golem, a clay giant made of clay, to protect the Prague ghetto from attacks.

The Maharal is buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague, where his grave is still visited by thousands of people from all over the world who come to pay their respects and leave wishes on small pieces of paper.
