Tu Bishvat
Tu Bishvat
Also known as the New Year of Trees. It could be said that it's one of the most popular holidays. There are only a few commandments associated with it. Its celebration falls on the 15th day of the month of Shevat, which is usually sometime at the end of January. In Israel, the first trees (almond trees) begin to bloom at this time, and essentially a new cycle of Mother Nature begins.
How we celebrate: The holiday is not described in the Torah, so the ways of celebration differ. In Israel, since the 1970s, planting trees has been a beautiful tradition. In our country, temperatures are still far below zero at that time and the ground is frozen. Planting anything is therefore not entirely possible. Contributions are therefore collected, for which trees are planted in Israel.
What we eat: A large and tasty feast is customary. During it, 15 types of fruit or other produce should be eaten. Preferably those that are typical for Israel. The table is thus mainly occupied by pomegranates, figs, olives, dates or grapes. And wine is also drunk. Everyone should drink four cups. It starts with white, then white wine is mixed with a little red, followed by red with a little white, and ends with pure red. This process is meant to symbolize the four seasons. Children, of course, reach for the famous Israeli grape juices.
What we wish: There is no special wish for this holiday. One can make do with just "Tu Bishvat sameach". That is, wishing "Happy Tu Bishvat".
