14.05. 1948
What does this date mean?
Why is this date so significant? It is the day when the State of Israel was established. David Ben-Gurion - the main founder of the state and also its first Prime Minister - declared it as Eretz-Israel (Land of Israel). Today, the airport in Tel Aviv and countless streets, parks, and other places are named after him. However, the declaration of an independent state was not that simple. The very next day, the Arab-Israeli war began, which lasted for a whole year, after which a ceasefire was declared and a temporary border was established, separating the territory of Israel from the territory of Palestine.
What was it like before?
Tendencies for the creation of an independent state were already present at the congresses of the first Zionists at the end of the 19th century. Originally, a territory in Africa was supposed to become the Jewish land, but eventually, the choice fell on Palestine, where young and older Zionists from all over the world had been flocking since the beginning of the 20th century. They bought land, built kibbutzim, and farmed. However, they were still under the British-French mandate. Israel was established before its expiration and also as a response to the horrors of the Holocaust.
