    Kniha Ma’ase merkava se zabývá fascinujícím pozdně starověkým mystickým textem, který vznikl v talmudickém období v židovském prostředí v oblasti Blízkého východu. Patří mezi několik málo textů, u nichž není pochybnost, že náleží k žánru hejchalotické literatury. Tak označujeme pozoruhodné, u nás téměř neznámé texty, obsahující záznamy o mystických vizích lidí, kteří si říkali jordej merkava. Tato literatura se obvykle datuje do prvních několika století obecného letopočtu, vychází však z ještě starších tradic z období druhého Chrámu. Především navazuje na vize proroka Ezechiela, který spatřil nebeský trůn – vůz, hebrejsky merkava.
