Magen David
What is it?
It is a six-pointed star associated with King David and often referred to as David's Shield. Although this motif was depicted on some parts of the Jewish Temple, it was merely decorative. It appears as a symbol of Judaism only from the 17th century. So how did the six-pointed star become a symbol?
Legend
Romantic stories about the Star of David lead to the streets of medieval Prague. The Prague Jewish community was the first to adopt this symbol as its own. From there, mainly thanks to Jewish writings, it spread throughout the world and thus became a universal symbol of Judaism. According to Kabbalists, the star is supposed to protect against evil spirits.
Reality
Historians long debated whether the legend was actually true. However, most of them have been leaning towards a different version for several decades. Yet it is in many ways close to the legend. The symbol did indeed begin to appear frequently in medieval Prague. It appeared on banners carried in honor of the coronation of Vladislav Jagiellon, it adorns the Old-New Synagogue, the Jewish Town Hall, and was also on the seal of the Jewish community. However, as a simple symbol of Judaism, the star was not generally accepted until the 19th century.
